A World-Class Bioluminescence At Luminous Lagoon Jamaica!
It is one of the best places in the world for viewing bioluminescence (since it was discovered) due to the Jamaica Luminous Lagoon. A #wanderwishlist must include a trip to the Luminous Lagoon Montego Bay, Jamaica.
Get a glimpse of Jamaica's Luminous Lagoon
Dinoflagellates are microorganisms that cause a blue-looking blue light to appear when disturbed in the Luminous Lagoon, a bay. A splash or touch of the water will cause bioluminescence in the lagoon and cause a captivating glow of ultra-blue light across the lagoon.
As it forms where the fresh waters from the Martha Brae River meet the Caribbean Sea, this bay is unique because it has mangroves around it. These tiny creatures thrive in the sea because of the mixing of fresh and salty water that fills the bay.
Embark On A Tour Of Glistening Waters
About 30 minutes from Montego Bay, the lagoon is located nearby Falmouth, Jamaica's historical town. Drive-up the Edward Seaga Highway (North-South Highway) from Kingston, and that takes about 2.5 hours.
Getting to the luminous lagoon from the mainland may be challenging since you will need a boat to fully take advantage of its wonders. A tour can be booked much more easily. Tour guides in Falmouth can provide locals with information about tours that depart from most hotels in Montego Bay.
Tours go out every 30 minutes or so after sunset, maybe around 6:30 pm. About 4 boats take you out onto the lagoon. It won't take long to wait. Tourists pay about 20USD and locals 1500JMD. As part of your purchase, you'll receive a free beverage.
Luminous Lagoon Jamaica - Swimming in Awe
It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to swim in bright, transparent, ultra-blue water!
The bathrooms in the building have changing areas where you can put on your swimsuit before leaving. You should change before swimming if you plan on swimming since there are no changing rooms on the boat and the crowds could be a bit overwhelming.
Afterward, a brief boat ride and some informative bioluminescence from your tour guide and captain get you ready for diving. How exciting! The best view can be obtained by getting a seat on either side of the boat.
It's most exciting to leap in. It is fun to swim at night, and you will have a blast! It is safe for you to swim there, according to the tour guides. Don't forget to make a big splash and watch the water light up in blue all around you!
Splash around and watch the dark blue waters turn bright blue as you watch the bright blue water turn dark blue. After a few moments, you ooh as the blue light flitters away.
The World's Bioluminescence: Capture the Glow of the Glow
The luminous lagoon poses a considerable challenge when photographing it. Selfies and other forms of self-inflicted photography are not acceptable in the water. It is recommended not to use flash and a quality camera is necessary.
A photographer named Paparazzi will be present to take photos for you during the tour. As a solo traveler, this is ideal. Take advantage of this phenomenon and don't stress about the cost too much.
